On 14 November 2025, Storm Claudia swept across Ireland, bringing severe weather conditions and significant flooding to the Leinster and Munster provinces.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) was activated (EMSR849) to assess the extent and impact of flooding in the affected regions.

This data visualisation, obtained using the CEMS data, shows the  flooded areas along the River Shannon and its tributaries in the Athlone Area of Interest, which have caused damage in towns such as Banagher and Athlone. This Delineation Monitoring 2 product indicates that approximately 7,206 ha were flooded, 8.7 ha of built-up areas were potentially affected, along with nearly 53.1km of roads and 19 km of railway infrastructure. An estimated 1,030 people were potentially impacted in this region.

The value-added information provided by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service is crucial for monitoring and mapping disasters worldwide. More information about this activation is available here.
