On 18 November 2025, intense flooding and a devastating landslide struck the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northern Italy following prolonged, intense rainfall. The area surrounding the towns of Gorizia and Romans d’Isonzo were affected by significant inundation, with rivers overtopping their banks and submerging adjacent lowlands.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on the same day, reveals the heavy sediment discharge into the Gulf of Trieste. The turbid, light brown plumes along the coastline reflect the high volume of runoff carried by the Isonzo River.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites support the monitoring of flood dynamics and sediment transport, providing insights for emergency management and post-disaster assessments.
