Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe
Located 3,454 metres above sea level, the Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe and a renowned observation point in the Swiss Alps. Nestled between the Jungfrau and Mönch peaks, it provides spectacular views of the surrounding glaciers and mountains.
The station is reached by a cogwheel train which ascends from Kleine Scheidegg through tunnels carved into the mountains—an engineering feat completed in 1912 and still a major tourist attraction today.
This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 11 August 2024, shows the station and part of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Copernicus satellite data is essential to monitoring glaciers, providing scientists and decision-makers with tools to assess long-term environmental changes in Europe’s mountain regions.
