The Motagua River, Guatemala
Stretching over 480 kilometres from the Guatemalan highlands to the Caribbean Sea, the Motagua River is one of the most important waterways in Central America. It winds through diverse landscapes, from rugged mountains to fertile plains, supporting agriculture, fisheries, and numerous communities. For centuries, the river has served as a vital route for transporting goods and people. Today, it also forms part of the border between Guatemala and Honduras along its lower reaches.
This false-colour Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 9 March 2024, shows the Motagua River and surrounding fertile areas.
