At over tens of thousands of years old, the Seine River is central to the landscape of France and, in particular, to the region of Normandy.

Stretching nearly 200km, the river flows through Paris and Rouen, Normandy’s capital, before ending in the English Channel. The river’s significance is reflected in industrial and recreational port activities, highlighting its economic role in the region. In Rouen, initiatives are underway to open up the quaysides of the Seine to the public through the opening of parks, gardens, and restaurants.

A section of the Seine River is visible in this false-colour image produced with the data acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 19 September 2024. Rouen can be seen straddling the river to the east.

Copernicus delivers comprehensive Earth Observation data useful for urban planning and environmental management. This information is key to effective decision-making for a more sustainable future.
