A low-pressure system named Boris brought heavy rain to central Europe between 11 and 15 September, causing widespread flooding from Poland to Romania and at least seven casualties.

In Romania, more than 5,000 homes have been evacuated due to severe flooding, with roads in eight provinces blocked or severely affected. In the Czech Republic, 38 areas are on high alert, with more than 50,000 homes without power due to widespread blackouts. Thousands of residents have been evacuated and Prague has imposed emergency measures to prevent flooding in the city. In Poland, towns near the Czech border have been partially evacuated and communication networks are down. In Austria, one firefighter lost his life while battling floods in Lower Austria, which has now been declared a disaster area.

The flooded areas along the Polish-Czech border are visible in this image acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1A radar satellite on 15 September 2024.

In response to the floods, the On-Demand Mapping Team of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated to produce detailed maps of the affected areas. For more information, click here.
