Storm-induced sediment plume near Paros, Greece
In late March 2025, the Greek island of Paros was affected by a powerful storm which caused intense flooding, particularly in the towns of Parikia and Naousa. Torrential rain and hailstorms inundated streets, carrying vehicles and debris through urban areas. Although the damage was significant, emergency services successfully rescued 13 stranded individuals, with no reported injuries or missing persons.
This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 1 April 2025, shows the aftermath of the storm, with a large sediment plume clearly visible off the northern coast near Naousa. The brownish discolouration in the sea indicates the presence of sediments washed into the bay by floodwaters—a common consequence of extreme rainfall events.
Copernicus data provides crucial support for post-storm assessments, helping authorities to monitor coastal water quality, sediment transport, and the broader environmental impact of severe weather events.
