Situated on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, Toruń is one of the country’s oldest and most historically significant cities. Established during the Teutonic Order’s Christianisation of Eastern Europe, Toruń is renowned for its well-preserved architecture, including the Teutonic Castle, Old Town, and New Town, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status as a prime example of a medieval European trading and administrative centre.

Toruń is also celebrated as the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, born in 1473, whose heliocentric theory revolutionised our understanding of the universe and after whom the European Union’s Earth Observation component is named.

Toruń is visible in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 18 September 2024.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites play an important role in monitoring global cultural heritage sites. They deliver valuable data for land use and change assessments and ground motion detection, providing key insights for better protecting these areas.
