Wildfires affect Ypoá National Park, Paraguay
On 10 January 2025, authorities in Paraguay declared a 60-day national emergency due to widespread forest fires. The fires have impacted public and private protected wild areas, biodiversity, and local communities. As of 10 January, nearly 15,000 hectares had been affected, most of which are in the eastern region of the country. With over 2,200 heat sources and 218 active fires registered, the heat sources recorded in January 2025 have surpassed the historical average of the last seven years.
Ypoá National Park, a protected area and Ramsar Site, serves as a key aquatic environment for wildlife, providing habitat to several threatened species and plants. The park has been affected by the recent fires in Paraguay, as seen in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 12 January.
Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites serves as an essential resource for tracking the extent of global wildfires and assessing their impacts on affected ecosystems and communities.
