Winter in Triglav National Park, Slovenia
Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park and a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, located in the Julian Alps in the northwest of the country. Dominated by Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, the park is characterised by alpine ridges, high plateaus, and karst landscapes.
This false-colour image, acquired on 27 December 2025 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows a dense layer of fog trapped within the valley. Snow is visible in bright white tones, while ice-free terrain and vegetation appears in shades of brown and red.
Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites helps scientists and local authorities monitor snow cover and better understand how winter extremes influence sensitive alpine ecosystems.
