Drought on the Iberian Peninsula
In autumn 2025, persistently warm conditions combined with limited rainfall led to persistent drought conditions across the Iberian Peninsula. As rainfall deficits accumulated, soil moisture levels declined and water availability decreased, increasing pressure on agriculture, natural ecosystems, and water resources.
This data visualisation, produced using the Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) from the European Drought Observatory (EDO) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), shows the evolution of drought conditions in November 2025. It shows that large areas of south-western Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and Algeria were under alert conditions throughout the month.
Copernicus data helps authorities and communities track evolving drought conditions and support timely decision-making in drought-prone regions across Europe.
