Perućica, Europe’s largest rainforest
Situated within the Sutjeska National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Perućica is one of the last remaining primeval rainforests in Europe. Spanning deep valleys and steep mountain slopes, this untouched forest is a biodiversity hotspot, home to ancient beech, fir, and spruce trees, some over 300 years old. The area supports numerous rare and endemic species, making it essential to ecological preservation.
This 3D rendering of an image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 15 October 2024 shows the UNESCO-listed Perućica forest, which is located near the border with Montenegro. The rich autumn colours of the forest stand out in contrast to the surrounding mountainous landscape.
Copernicus provides key data for tracking forest health, biodiversity, and the impacts of climate change, helping to protect ecosystems from habitat degradation.
