The Szczecin Lagoon at the mouth of the Oder River
The Szczecin Lagoon, also known as the Oder Lagoon, is a large transboundary coastal wetland shared between Poland and Germany. Designated under the Ramsar Convention and belonging to the Natura 2000 network, it is recognised as a wetland of international importance. Situated at the mouth of the Oder River, near the cities of Świnoujście in Poland and Ueckermünde in Germany, the lagoon is characterised by shallow brackish waters, extensive reed beds, and surrounding wetlands.
The lagoon and its surroundings appear covered with snow and ice in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 false–colour image acquired on 7 January 2026. Snow is visible in white bright tones, while vegetation appears in shades of red.
Copernicus satellite data supports monitoring of water quality, habitat dynamics, and land use in the area, helping authorities manage coastal ecosystem across national borders.
