On 29 September 2024, a wildfire broke out in the Peloponnese (Greece), prompting the evacuation of several villages. 350 firefighters were dispatched to battle the blaze, which spread rapidly due to strong winds.

At least two deaths caused by the fire have been reported. Greece has been affected by more than 4,500 wildfires during the summer of 2024, with June and July marking the hottest months in the country's recorded history.

In this Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on 1 October 2024, smoke from the fire near Corinth is visible.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) (EMSR767) has been activated to assess the damage caused by the wildfire. More details are available here.

By delivering information for monitoring and mapping the extent and effects of wildfires around the world, Copernicus supports emergency management efforts and helps inform damage assessments for a more efficient recovery.
