Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS)

The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) provides free and open data and services tracking these important ocean indicators. Its information helps to combat pollution, protect marine environments, develop new energy resources, raise global awareness of ocean-related issues, and much more.

Implemented by Mercator Ocean International

The health of our planet and its oceans can be assessed using indicators such as water quality and temperature.

Overview

CMEMS supports EU policies, international ocean governance, ‘Blue Economy’ maritime sectors, and society at large. Its primary objectives include:

  • Delivering accurate, timely, and consistent information on the ocean
  • Supporting EU marine and climate directives and international agreements
  • Enabling innovation and competitiveness in the marine economy

CMEMS relies on a network of European marine data production centres. These centres gather data from satellites, in-situ sensors, and models. You can access this data for free through the CMEMS online portal, which hosts data on:

  • Ocean temperature
  • Sea level
  • Ocean salinity
  • Currents
  • Ice cover

This information has applications ranging from fisheries and aquaculture to coastal resilience.

Users can also access powerful tools to explore, analyse, and visualise ocean data at both the global and regional levels with forecasts, real-time updates, and historical records. CMEMS provides support through trainings, workshops, and technical resources to help users make the most of the information.
